What is a Water Footprint?
It is a measure of the amount of water used to produce each of the goods and services we consume. It can be measured for a single process, for a product, or for an entire multinational company.
It has three types: green, , includes rainwater stored in the soil structure and in the entire surficial and sub-surficial biome, including root systems, microorganisms and the entire trophic chain that results from a biodiverse ecosystem, and lost through runoff and evapotranspiration, which increases when soils are not regenerated; blue, which refers to water from surface or groundwater sources that is evaporated, incorporated into products, or transferred between water bodies or time periods; and grey, which represents the freshwater needed to dilute pollutants to meet water quality standards.
UPSTREAM: Raw material extraction and processing before production.
CORE: Manufacturing and main production processes.
